Homologating a non-EU car in Belgium

Individuele goedkeuring / Réception individuelle

A vehicle imported from outside the EU needs an individual approval (individuele goedkeuring / réception individuelle) before it can be registered in Belgium, since only European and Belgian type approvals are otherwise accepted. The application and inspection go through an approved inspection center, with a fixed filing fee due up front regardless of outcome.

The process, step by step

  1. 1
    Eligibility check

We confirm the vehicle doesn't already qualify under an existing EU or Belgian type approval before starting the individual route.

  2. 2
    Case filing

An individual approval case file is opened at the inspection center, with the standard filing fee paid at this stage.

  3. 3
    Technical inspection

The vehicle is inspected in person against Belgian/EU requirements.

  4. 4
    Modifications, if flagged

Any non-compliant points are corrected and the vehicle is re-presented.

  5. 5
    Approval and registration

Once approved, you receive the registration application form and can insure and plate the vehicle.

Typical timeline

Several weeks to a few months, depending on the inspection center's schedule and how much the vehicle needs to be brought into compliance.

Cost

The individual approval case filing fee is a fixed amount (roughly €398 as of the most recent published schedule), separate from any technical/modification work the vehicle needs. We confirm the current fee and full picture after reviewing your vehicle.

Authority: FOD Mobiliteit / SPF Mobilité, via an approved inspection center

Frequently asked

Is the filing fee refunded if the vehicle doesn't pass inspection?

No, the filing fee covers opening and processing the case regardless of outcome. This is exactly why we assess a vehicle's real compliance gaps before filing, so you're not paying to find out what we could have told you up front.

Can I import several of the same model together in Belgium?

Each vehicle still needs its own individual approval. Belgium doesn't approve by type for non-EU imports, even if every unit is identical, so the process and fee apply per vehicle.

Still need to source the vehicle?

HomologateMyCar handles what happens once the car is in Europe. If you haven't sourced it yet, our sister company DriveSino exports vehicles from China to Belgium and has a dedicated import guide for it.
