What Does Homologating a Car in the EU Actually Cost?

There's no single EU-wide number, because the process itself isn't EU-wide: it's a national procedure with a national fee schedule, plus whatever modification your specific vehicle needs. Here's what's actually fixed, what varies, and the real fees we can point to.

Every country guide on this site gives a qualitative cost note rather than a single number, and that's deliberate, not evasive: quoting one EU-wide figure would be actively misleading, since the process, the fee structure, and the amount of modification work vary by country and by the specific vehicle. What we can do here is separate the part of the cost that's a fixed, published fee from the part that depends entirely on your vehicle.

The part that's a fixed, published fee

  • Belgium charges a fixed individual-approval filing fee, roughly โ‚ฌ398 as of the most recently published schedule, due when the case is opened at the inspection center, regardless of whether the vehicle ultimately passes.
  • Luxembourg adds a โ‚ฌ50 chancellery (tax stamp) fee on top of the technical service's own charges and any customs duties, part of the fixed cost of the rรฉception individuelle nationale itself.
  • Most other countries fold the technical service's fee into their own schedule rather than publishing one flat number, which is why our country pages describe the fee structure rather than inventing a figure that doesn't exist.

The part that depends on your vehicle

This is usually the bigger share of the total, and it's genuinely not knowable without seeing the vehicle: a well-documented, largely-compliant car (say, a US-market Mustang generation with a real EU-market sibling to reference) costs meaningfully less to bring into compliance than a vehicle needing an exemption request or real modification work, like headlight units, emissions documentation, or a rear fog light. Two identical-looking cars from different origins, or even the same model in a different trim, can land at very different totals.

Why we quote after reviewing your vehicle

Publishing a fake average would flatter some cars and badly undersell others, which is exactly the kind of number that ends up costing a buyer real money if they budget against it. We review your specific vehicle, cross-reference it against your destination country's actual requirements, and give you a number that's grounded in that vehicle, not a marketing average.
