Homologating a non-EU car in Sweden
Enskilt godkännande / registreringsbesiktning
A used vehicle imported from outside the EU generally can't use Sweden's enskilt godkännande (individual approval) route, which is reserved for new vehicles. Instead it goes through an origin check (ursprungskontroll) followed by a registration inspection (registreringsbesiktning) at an approved inspection company, with customs duty and VAT due on entry.
The process, step by step
- 1Customs declaration
The vehicle is declared to Swedish customs, with duty and VAT due before anything else proceeds.
- 2Origin check (ursprungskontroll)
The vehicle's identity and origin documents are verified before an inspection can be booked.
- 3Registration inspection (registreringsbesiktning)
An approved inspection company checks the vehicle against Swedish/EU technical requirements.
- 4Modifications, if flagged
Any non-compliant points are corrected and the vehicle is re-presented.
- 5Registration
Once approved, the vehicle is registered with Transportstyrelsen and plated.
Transportstyrelsen's own guidance points to roughly 4-12 weeks for the full import process, covering document collection, transport, customs, inspection wait times, the inspection itself, and registration.
Cost is driven by customs duty, VAT, and the inspection company's fees, plus any required modifications. We quote the full picture after reviewing your specific vehicle.
Frequently asked
No. Individual approval (enskilt godkännande) is reserved for new vehicles. A used import instead goes through an origin check and a registration inspection, a related but separate route.
It can be submitted alongside the origin-check application, but Transportstyrelsen in Borlänge must separately approve it before it can be used as the basis for a Swedish registration inspection.
HomologateMyCar handles what happens once the car is in Europe. If you haven't sourced it yet, our sister company DriveSino exports vehicles from China to Sweden and has a dedicated import guide for it.
