A vehicle imported from outside the EU generally needs schválení technické způsobilosti (technical-compliance approval) for the individually imported vehicle. A written application goes to the local obecní úřad obce s rozšířenou působností, which approves the vehicle once a testing station's protocol confirms it meets the technical requirements that applied in the Czech Republic when the vehicle was first type-approved. Passenger cars without EU type approval can only be imported and registered if under eight years old.

The process, step by step

    An approved testing station (zkušební stanice) examines the vehicle and issues a protocol confirming which technical requirements it meets.

    Approval decision

    The authority approves the vehicle's technical compliance based on the protocol, or the Ministry of Transport grants an exemption where a specific requirement can't reasonably be met.

    Registration

    Once approved, the vehicle is registered and plated.

Is there an age limit on cars imported without EU type approval?

Yes. A passenger car without EU type approval can only be imported and registered in the Czech Republic if it's under eight years old at the time of import.

What determines the CZK 1,500 vs CZK 2,000 fee?

It depends on whether the vehicle already holds a global (whole-vehicle) type approval from elsewhere: with one, the fee is CZK 1,500; without one, it's CZK 2,000.
