Homologating a non-EU car in Denmark

National individuel godkendelse

A vehicle imported from outside the EU without EU type approval needs Denmark's national individuel godkendelse: an approved inspection company (synsvirksomhed) examines the vehicle, and Færdselsstyrelsen oversees the application, before the original foreign registration certificate can be handed to Motorstyrelsen for registration.

The process, step by step

  1. 1
    Documentation review

The vehicle's foreign registration certificate and existing paperwork are checked.

  2. 2
Presenting the vehicle to a synsvirksomhed

An approved inspection company examines the vehicle against Danish/EU technical requirements.

  3. 3
    Færdselsstyrelsen's oversight

Færdselsstyrelsen reviews the inspection company's findings as part of the national individual approval process.

  4. 4
    Modifications, if flagged

Any non-compliant points are corrected and the vehicle is re-presented.

  5. 5
    Registration with Motorstyrelsen

Once approved, the original foreign registration certificate is submitted and the vehicle is registered and plated.

Typical timeline

Varies by inspection company and vehicle. We give you a realistic estimate after reviewing your vehicle.

Cost

Cost is driven by the inspection company's fee and any required modifications, separate from registration tax. We quote the full picture after reviewing your specific vehicle.

Authority: Færdselsstyrelsen (Danish Road Traffic Authority), via a synsvirksomhed (inspection company)

Frequently asked

Who actually inspects the vehicle, Færdselsstyrelsen or someone else?

An approved synsvirksomhed (inspection company) does the physical inspection; Færdselsstyrelsen oversees the application and the inspection company's work as part of the national approval process.

Does a modified vehicle need re-approval?

Yes. A vehicle that's been structurally altered after its original approval loses that approval and needs to be approved again before registration.

Still need to source the vehicle?

HomologateMyCar handles what happens once the car is in Europe. If you haven't sourced it yet, our sister company DriveSino exports vehicles from China to Denmark and has a dedicated import guide for it.
