Homologating a non-EU car in Estonia

A vehicle bought outside the EU and brought into Estonia is registered through Transpordiamet's e-service, but before that a technical compliance check confirms the vehicle's VIN, completeness, and conformity with EU type approval and required markings. A Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is often required for vehicles from outside the EU, such as the US or Japan.
The process, step by step
- 1Pre-registration application
A pre-registration application is filed through Transpordiamet's e-service.
- 2Documentation gathering
The vehicle's proof of acquisition, foreign registration certificate, and (for non-EU origin) customs declaration are assembled.
- 3Technical compliance check
An inspection point checks the VIN against the documents, the vehicle's completeness, its conformity with EU type approval, and required markings.
- 4CoC, if required
For vehicles from outside the EU or very new vehicles, a Certificate of Conformity may be required to prove the car meets EU environmental and safety requirements.
- 5Registration
Once the checks are complete, the vehicle is registered and plated.
